It used to be that pearls were very rare and possessing pearl jewelry one usually meant that you were royalty or very, very rich. That's just not the case anymore. Now, mankind has figured out how to produce pearls naturally on Pearl farms. Pearl farms raise baby oysters, which are artificially bred in a hatchery of sorts, or naturally, in their usual environment. Oysters are suspended in a water cage, which contains the perfect balance of water and food, kept at around 75 degrees. The baby oyster is grown in these ideal conditions until it reaches 2-3 years of age...and then it gets put to work!
Depending upon the type of oyster and pearl made- either freshwater pearls or salt-water pearls, a piece or particle of a foreign material (usually a small piece of shell) is inserted into the oyster. The oyster farmer makes a small, half-inch incision into the oyster and inserts the prepared particle into it. It then takes the oyster at least six weeks to recuperate from the shock! The pearl starts to form in the next 6-10 days.
Once the particle has been inserted into the oyster, it starts to secrete a substance called nacre, which surrounds the particle in layers and eventually forms a pearl. The process of adding layer after layer to make a pearl takes 2-4 years! After investing so much time into the production of one tiny pearl, the farmer harvest the pearls and sends them off to be made into jewelry.
